3 Mothers of Faith

Mother’s Day is a special time to honor the women who have nurtured, prayed for, and guided us in faith. While flowers and cards are wonderful, the most lasting tribute we can give is recognizing the spiritual strength and faithfulness that godly mothers demonstrate every day. Scripture is filled with women who modeled courageous, faithful motherhood. As we celebrate Mother’s Day, let’s look at three mothers of faith from the Bible who continue to inspire us today.

1. Hannah: A Mother Who Prayed

Hannah’s story, found in 1 Samuel 1–2, begins with deep sorrow. She was unable to have children and cried out to God in desperation. But even in her anguish, she never stopped praying. Her heartfelt petition was simple and bold: if God would give her a son, she would dedicate him to the Lord’s service.

God answered her prayer, and she gave birth to Samuel—one of Israel’s greatest prophets. True to her word, she brought Samuel to the temple and entrusted him to God’s care. Hannah teaches us that faithful motherhood begins with prayer and surrender. As she declared in 1 Samuel 2:1, “My heart rejoices in the Lord; in the Lord my horn is lifted high.”

2. Mary: A Mother Who Believed

Mary, the mother of Jesus, showed incredible faith in the face of the unknown. When the angel Gabriel told her she would give birth to the Son of God, she responded with humble trust: “I am the Lord’s servant… May your word to me be fulfilled” (Luke 1:38).

Mary didn’t have all the answers. She would face judgment, fear, and deep sorrow—especially as she watched her Son suffer on the cross. Yet through it all, she believed God's promise and remained faithful. Mary reminds us that a mother’s faith can shape history, even when the path is uncertain.

3. Lois: A Mother Who Passed on Her Faith

Lois, though mentioned only briefly in 2 Timothy 1:5, plays a powerful role in the story of early Christianity. Paul commends the “sincere faith” that lived first in Timothy’s grandmother Lois and then in his mother Eunice. These women raised Timothy in the Scriptures, preparing him to become a trusted leader in the early church.

Lois may not have had a public ministry, but her legacy lived on through her grandson’s faith and calling. She reminds us that faithful motherhood often happens quietly—through everyday moments of teaching, prayer, and love.

Honoring Mothers of Faith

This Mother’s Day, let us honor the women who, like Hannah, Mary, and Lois, have poured out their lives in love and faith. Whether you’re a mother, grandmother, mentor, or spiritual mother to someone in need, your faith matters. Your prayers matter. Your example matters. May you be encouraged and blessed, knowing that God sees and honors every act of love done in His name.
